Subject Intent

Intent

The intent of the GCSE Sociology curriculum at Thamesview is to provide a comprehensive and engaging education that enables students to develop a deep understanding of society, culture, and social processes. Our aim is to nurture critical thinking skills, promote social awareness, and encourage active participation in the global community. The curriculum has been designed using a 'Trivium' approach:

  • Developing rich foundational knowledge
  • Thinking and deepening our understanding and wisdom through questions, discussion and debate
  • Communication and expressing our learning

Through the study of Sociology, we intend to equip our students with the knowledge and analytical tools they need to critically analyse contemporary social issues and develop an understanding of the diverse societies in which they live. We aspire to foster open-mindedness, empathy, and an appreciation for cultural diversity, helping our students become responsible and informed citizens.

Implementation

To implement our intent, we have designed a curriculum that follows the guidelines set by the GCSE Sociology specification, providing a structured and cohesive learning journey for our students. We ensure a balance between theoretical concepts and real-life applications, incorporating a variety of teaching methods and resources to address different learning styles. These approaches incorporate Rosenshine’s principles.

Our teaching approach involves a combination of teacher-led discussions, collaborative group work, and independent research opportunities. We encourage regular debates and classroom interactions to stimulate critical thinking and develop confident communication skills.

The implementation of GCSE Sociology at Thamesview extends beyond the classroom. We actively foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment, promoting respect, empathy, and open dialogue.

Impact

Through our curriculum and teaching methods, we seek to ensure the following outcomes:

  1. High attainment and progress: Our students achieving targeted results in their GCSE Sociology examinations. We want them to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of sociological theories, concepts, and research methods and be able to apply this knowledge effectively to various contexts.
  2. Critical thinking and analysis: s We seek for our students to develop strong analytical skills meaning they can identify and challenge societal assumptions and biases, contributing to a more informed and equitable society.
  3. Global awareness and cultural sensitivity: We plan for our students to exhibit a deep understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity, recognising their own position within a global society. We wish for them to display empathy towards different social groups, demonstrate respect for diverse perspectives, and actively engage in promoting social justice and equality.
  4. Confidence and communication: We provide opportunities for students develop confidence in expressing their ideas and opinions, actively participating in discussions and debates. We promote the opportunity for students to be able to articulate their thoughts effectively and respectfully, engaging in constructive dialogue with their peers and teachers.

Overall, the GCSE Sociology provision aims to empower students to develop a critical understanding of society, fostering personal growth and shaping them into young adults who are well-prepared to contribute positively to the world around them.
