I Think My Child Has Special Educational Needs. What Can I Do?

“A child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability that calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her”

  1. Who should I speak to in school?

Our Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator (SENCo) Mrs Cyman is the best person to contact. The SENCo has responsibility for what happens on a day-to-day basis at Thamesview School for pupils with a Special Educational Need - she provides professional advice to other teachers in school to help ensure all pupils make progress.

Mrs Cyman is supported by the Assistant SENCo Ms McCarthy. Together they oversee liaison with outside agencies, ensure the correct provision in school and manage a team of teaching assistants.

At Thamesview School we recognise that all pupils are entitled to a high quality provision that will enable them to achieve and make progress in all aspects of their life, not just academic outcomes.

Our intent is for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to have the same access to a broad and balanced academic curriculum, as well as the wider curriculum, in order for them to experience success in all aspects of their life. When a need is identified the school works inclusively across Curriculum, Pastoral and SEND in order to effectively meet the needs of all students. Suitable provisions and interventions are planned and implemented, which develop the abilities of students, to allow them to achieve well as individuals and members of the wider community.

Students with SEND make progress (from their starting points) in line with other non-SEND students.

Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) - Kent County Council

Specialist resourced provision

The SRP Unit cater for students who have an EHCP. Admission to the units are managed by the local authority. The referral pathway is through the LA, no student can be admitted without the prior agreement of KCC. Further details can be found in our admissions policy. Students who are attached to these units are taught in the mainstream school. Students who have been allocated a formal placement by the local authority to the specialist resourced provision for Physical Disability (PD) benefit from access to physiotherapy and personal care if required. All pupils attached to this provision have all of their lessons in the mainstream school, with the deployment of teaching assistants to support their needs in the classroom, where appropriate.

If you have any questions or would like to book a tour of the provision please contact SENCO@thamesview.kent.sch.uk

For further information on how places in the specialist resourced provision are allocated please see the Kent Local Offer.
