Plans for Reopening in September 2020

Posted on: 23.07.20

Dear Parents/Carers

Following the release of government guidance earlier this month, I am writing to you to outline the new arrangements for the school reopening in September 2020.

Many of you will have already received telephone call from your child’s personal tutor explaining the changes that have been made to the school site, your child’s classroom allocations, arrival and finish times, as well as the precautionary measures we are putting in place to support a full return to education in September.

September will look quite different to previous years and we have consulted with other schools and researched various options to create the best model for Thamesview School. Following the DFE Guidance we have set up Year Group Bubbles that will be based in one area of the school to reduce the chance of transmission of the virus. Students will no longer move around the school to their subject areas. Instead, teachers will deliver lessons in each of the areas for the year group bubbles.

On their first day, students should arrive at school in full school uniform, where they will be shown where their year group bubble is and how to access this using the different access points around the school. Students will be allocated a timetable with rooms on it and all rooms will be located in their bubble. If students need to be taken to a specialist space for a lesson, such as a Science Lab or the Food Tech room, their teacher will collect them and take them there, ensuring the bubble is not broken. Students will also be provided with a coloured lanyard on their first day in school, which they MUST wear at all times. This is to help ensure that students do not mix with other bubbles or year groups.

We are committed to continuing the full range of subject studied at Thamesview School for all year groups and as such students will be continuing with all options subjects they have chosen and are required to bring their Dance and PE kits to school as usual.

The timings of the school day, including break and lunch times, will remain the same as previous years with lessons starting at 8:35am. However, student arrival and finish times are being slightly staggered so that different bubbles do not mix on entering and exiting the school. Students arriving to school by foot will have a designated gate to enter through. However please be aware that there is no access to the school via the View Point Gate for anyone and the View Point Car park is now inaccessible. We are encouraging all students to walk or cycle to school where possible, however if you drop off or pick up your children from school by car, please can you make arrangements to do this outside of the school site wherever possible. If you have to come on to school site to drop off or pick up your children, please make sure you use the drop off zone at the very front of the car park and ensure you stay in the car at all times. To help manage the flow of students into the school and to avoid mixing the year group bubbles, it is very important that you stick to the allocated arrival time for your children. Students who arrive early to school either on foot (walking or cycling) or by car will be asked to wait outside the school until their allocated arrival time.

Students who arrive late to school must report to reception where they will be met and escorted to their bubble by a member of staff.

Canteen arrangements will be very different from September. Students will not have access to the canteen areas or payment card top up machines. Breakfast, snacks and lunches must be pre-ordered the week before and payment can be made online. Snacks and meals will then be delivered to each year group bubble at the start of break and lunch time and students will have their lunch in their bubble or in the outside area allocated to their year group. If you receive Free School Meals your account will be automatically topped up each day as usual. Further details about this system will be sent out via ParentMail so please make sure you can access this and let us know as soon as possible if your details change.

We are also asking students to ensure they only bring the equipment necessary (pen, pencil, calculator, ruler, planner, PE kit etc) for each day as lockers will not be available at the start of the year and students will NOT  be able to borrow equipment from others.

Although these changes represent a large shift from the previous school arrangements, we appreciate the need for consistency for both students and parents and that regular changes can cause additional stress and anxiety. To help provide consistency moving forwards, we will be working this way until at least February Half Term even if national restrictions ease.

You will no doubt have many questions regarding the arrangements for next year and so to help answer these, a presentation detailing the full arrangements for next year has been uploaded to the school website and can be accessed at http://ow.ly/6eyx50AEQBh. This also has a FAQ section, which I am confident will answer any question you may have. However, if you would like further information about these arrangements or you would like to discuss these please contact the school office at office@thamesview.kent.sch.uk.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff, students, parents and governors of Thamesview School for their continued hard work, dedication and support during the school closures. Together we have been able to work through these difficult times and I am very much looking forward to welcoming everyone back to school in September.

Yours Sincerely

Mr G Rorke
