Modern Foreign Language

Aims for the Department

Thamesview’s modern languages department aims to enhance each pupils appreciation and understanding of foreign cultures and lifestyles in general, and those of France and Spain in particular.

Whether pupils are absolute beginners or competent linguists, we deliver challenging and stimulating lessons to stretch all levels and abilities.

Interactive Learning

All classrooms have either interactive whiteboards and projectors or touchscreen TVs; this helps our teaching staff to engage the students with modern technology in the learning process.

MFL Curriculum Plan

Year Group

Curriculum overview

Years 7, 8, 9

In Year 7 and Year 8, pupils learn the basics of their chosen language. From colours and greetings to clothing and discussing holidays, pupils are gradually introduced to increasingly complex grammar and linguistic structures. In Year 9 pupils are preparing for their GCSE language course and begin to experience full GCSE style exams and concepts. By the end of Year 9, pupils should be able to write and speak 90 words on a given topic using 3 time frames.

Year 10

In Key Stage 4, language students are stretched to improve upon and expand their learning in Key Stage 3.

We prepare pupils for the AQA GCSE in either Spanish or French, with final exams in listening, speaking, reading and writing sat towards the end of Year 11.

Pupils in Year 10 sit two practise speaking assessments to prepare them for the final speaking exam, and exam style questions in every lesson prepare them well for their mocks and final exams.
