Aims for the department

With an established team of professionals, the English Department aim to encourage students to form ideas and exercise their creativity. The Department offer an interesting range of topics and deliver the topics using a range of methods which contribute to the progress of the students. We aim to continue to develop students’ knowledge which will result in them fulfilling their fullest potential.

Interactive learning

All classrooms have either interactive whiteboards and projectors or touchscreen TVs; this helps our teaching staff to engage the students with modern technology in the learning process.

Copies of the texts and resources are used throughout the teaching and learning within the department. Texts are reviewed regularly to ensure that students have access to a variety of different genres.

Curriculum overview


Key Stage 3 (Years 7 and 8)

Students study a varied curriculum at Key Stage 3. Not only does the curriculum offer variety of topics but also contribute to the foundations of learning which will help students to achieve their fullest potential at GCSE.

Key Stage 3 Topics Include:

  • The study of a novel
  • Works of Shakespeare
  • Poetry
  • 19th Century Texts
  • Creative Writing

Key Stage 4 (Year 9, 10 and 11)

English Language GCSE (Exam Board = Eduqas): Students complete two exams; Component One and Component Two. Examples of texts from the 19th century to the 21st will need to be analysed and commented on by the candidates. The skills associated with creative writing and non-fiction writing are also expected to be demonstrated by the students. A Speaking and Listening activity also contributes to the exam requirements.

English Literature GCSE (Exam Board = AQA): Students complete two exams and are expected to analyse and comment of the variety of texts which studied throughout the course. Topics of study include; Poetry, Modern Prose, Shakespeare and a 19th century prose.

Literature Texts Include:

  • Conflict Poetry – A Collection of poems from the AQA Anthology.
  • ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’
  • ‘Romeo and Juliet’
  • ‘An Inspector Calls’ or ‘DNA’
