What is a Growth Mind-set?

This is based around the idea that your performance can always be improved through practice and effort.  The language we use in encouraging children is very important; using terms like ‘clever’ and ‘talented’ can give children the idea that their achievements are down to the type of person they are or the characteristics they were born with - which are fixed.  Praising children for working hard, learning from failure or being resilient gives them the message that their success is based on how hard the work on something.

Here at Thamesview we believe that having a growth mindset is the key to succeeding in all areas. Our message is simple - with the right amount of effort and positive attitude you can succeed in any area of life. A positive mind-set towards learning can place anyone in a great position to progress. Challenge should be seen as positive and something that pushes us out of our comfort zones and into a reality we never knew existed.  Teachers at Thamesview expect excellence from every student and in return give students the guidance and feedback to help them improve. We allow students to have the chance to fail so that they can learn from their mistakes and move forward in their learning.

How can you help your child?

As the most important adult in your child’s life it really will support them if you:

  • Be positive about learning, getting stuck and trying different things when you are stuck
  • Encourage your child to take part in every opportunity that comes their way – even if they think they can’t do something
  • Be an informed parent about what is required to be a successful student
  • Encourage good effort and support them going outside their comfort zone
  • Encourage them to reflect on both successes and failures – failure is often a good way of learning!
